R.I.P. Jerry Fuchs

November 9, 2009

Saturday evening Jerry Fuchs, drummer for multiple bands, including !!!, Maserati, the Turing Machine, and the Juan Maclean, passed away while attending a party.

According to the New York Post the Brooklyn born musician was attending a benefit in Williamsburg when the elevator he was on stalled. He and a friend attempted to jump from the car to the nearest floor. His friend was able to reach the fifth floor, however, Fuchs clothing became snagged on a part of the elevator, causing him to fall down the elevator shaft.

Fuchs was only 34 years old when he perished.

My exposure to his work was limited, having only heard his work with !!! and seen him this fall at Pygmalion Music Festival as a part of Maserati. Despite having slim knowledge of his work I believe it is fair to say that he was the most incredible drummer that I have ever seen perform. I was able to briefly meet him at a Pygmalion after party and for someone of such immense talent he was extremely down to earth and genial, not to mention he had a stellar mustache.

My heart goes out to Champaign natives Headlights, whose own Tristan Wraight spent time touring with the Georgia-based Maserati, and whose rapport with the drummer was quite strong.

Fuchs will certainly be missed, as a human being and as a musician. His contribution to the indie-rock landscape will not be soon forgotten.
