New She & Him just as fun

January 25, 2010

Right away a blast of drums provides that deep-down-good feeling that has become ubiquitous with the music Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward make together.

“In The Sun,” the first single from Volume Two by the duo known as She & Him, brings a burst of energy with it’s bouncy piano, chugging guitars and airy choruses aided by Tilly and the Wall sending the best kind of chills through your body.

Deschanel uses her magnificent voice to perfection yet again to sing the most melancholy verses (“I’ve been taking a beating…I’ll just keep it to myself in the sun”) and simply make it sound lovely.

She and Ward disclosed that they attempted the same recording process for their second collaboration as they did for the first; trying to shed any expectations and make the album as “organic” as possible. If this song is any indication of the rest of the album, it seems that they have recaptured the same aesthetic as their fantastic debut, Volume One.

From “In The Sun” I get the feeling that these talented musicians have reestablished their songwriting groove and made something that is genuinely enjoyable and genuinely She & Him.

If the warmth of this song is any indication this album will be a charming summer album. It may heat up the spring a little bit.

Don’t just take my word about the song, listen for yourself right here:
