Tor continues mashing with the best

Rating: 8.4/10

I’m a bit behind on this one, I can admit it, but I’d be remiss not to write about Montreal MC Tor’s latest mash-up project.

At first the idea sounds a bit out of left field: would the subdued majesty of Sufjan Stevens’ strings and horns work against against rap songs?

Yet it all comes together with a flowing beauty that is wonderful and unexpected.

My favorite track from this mixtape are the mix up of Sufjan’s “Star of Wonder” from Songs for Christmas and Aesop Rock’s “None Shall Pass.” There is a dynamic cohesion between these two songs that is aurally stunning and highly enjoyable.

A close second would be Sufjan’s “They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhh!” from Illinois and Brother Ali’s “Talkin’ My Shit.” It seems as though the bass line from “Zombies” was made to be sampled. Always a favorite, in pairing it with hip-hop beats Tor has taken it to a new level.

The other songs on the mixtape are just as enjoyable as these two, and a lot of fun to listen to. Tor uses two other songs from Illinois as well as A Sun Came and Seven Swans, he pairs those with tracks from Big Daddy Kane, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), C.L. Smooth, Outkast, and Grand Puba.

Tor’s Illinoize mixtape is available for a free download by visiting his Web site, don’t miss out on this one.
